Introduction
In the treatment of bipolar disorder, the major depressive episode is usually seen within 2 to 3 months, but it is usually not long enough for improvement. The first generation of treatment is a slow-release medication, called quetiapine. It is important to note that it should not be used long-term, and this drug must be carefully monitored. In this article we will compare the effectiveness and safety of seroquel in patients with bipolar depression. We will also review whether there are any specific safety and effectiveness concerns for this new medication.
Methods
We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients treated with seroquel between January 2000 and January 2008. Patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia were excluded from the analysis.
Results
The primary efficacy end point was the rate of worsening of mood and behavior symptoms during the first 6 months of treatment. This was measured by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression II, scale (QRSD II) questionnaire and the Clinical Global Impression (CGA) scale. The secondary efficacy end points were change in Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression I-II scores from baseline to 6 months. The primary safety end point was change in QRSD II and CGA scores from baseline to 6 months.
Conclusions
Quetiapine is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with bipolar depression who are on mood stabilizers or have not responded to other treatments. The most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications have been shown to be effective in improving the symptoms of patients with bipolar depression. Quetiapine is also well tolerated, but it has been associated with adverse effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, and sleep disturbances.

Bipolar disorder is a complex disorder that affects a substantial number of people worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1 in 3 people worldwide will experience a manic episode at some point in their lifetime. Although it is estimated that 5 million people worldwide are affected, about 30% of these people are estimated to have a depressive episode.1 It is believed that bipolar disorder is a major public health concern, but it is not clear how many people are affected.
Quetiapine is a new medication that belongs to the quetiapine class of antidepressants, which is a newer and effective form of antidepressant medication. It has been developed specifically for the treatment of bipolar disorder and is being used in clinical trials as a monotherapy for depression.
Quetiapine has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression, but it has not been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of bipolar disorder.2 In addition, quetiapine has not been approved for the treatment of psychosis, but it is also approved by the FDA for the treatment of schizophrenia.3
The main side effects of quetiapine are weight gain and hypomania.
